“The Southern Miss Honors College provides a community of highly intelligent peers for its students. In this community we are embraced and welcomed, yet also pushed to achieve even greater knowledge. It is a very refreshing environment – unique and enjoyable. There's nothing comparable.”
Erick Brown –
Honors College Presidential Scholar

“The Honors College is the richest experience I've had so far in my academic career. That is due, in large part, to the hard work of the Honors College administration. I've never once contemplated dropping out of the program (as some of my peers at other universities have done), and let's just face it, our programs rock! Where else do students get such an intimate classroom setting with the best professors on campus? ”

Lee Anna Woodcock – Evelyn Gandy Political Science Scholar

Admission to the Southern Miss Honors College

Admission to the Southern Miss honors College is competitive. Successful applicants are offered admission based on a combination of performance on standardized tests (ACT/SAT), high school academic record, evidence of creativity and leadership, community, and relative strength of applicant pool.

Generally, our minimum criteria for consideration are 27 ACT (combined SAT score of 1240) and a 3.5 high school grade point average as computed by The University of Southern Mississippi.

* *Core GPA is calculated with the student’s grades earned in coursework that is part of the college preparatory curriculum (CPC). It is calculated on a 4 point scale thus weighted grades earned in AP, advanced, IB or honors classes are not calculated on a higher scale. Consideration is given to applicants attempting AP, advanced, IB, or honors coursework, but primary emphasis is on grade point average.

In 2009, applicants offered admissions to the Honors College had an average ACT of 29 and an average unweighted core high school GPA of 3.77.

Student Internships Programs

The State Department is looking for outstanding undergraduate or graduate students to participate in their student internship program during the summer of 2009. The internships are either paid or unpaid depending on the student’s financial need. Interns are placed either in Washington D.C. or in embassies around the world! Even unpaid interns receive free housing and in some cases the State Department will pay for travel.

The State Department’s goal is to find students from diverse backgrounds to represent our diverse nation. Diversity can be in the form of language skills, physical diversity, regional diversity, national origin diversity, and racial diversity -- almost anything, so start thinking about what is unique about you and your college experience. Students with proven language skills in any of the following languages are especially welcomed: Arabic, Chinese, Bangla/Bengali, Hindi, Korean, Persian, Punjabi, Russian, Turkish, and Urdu. Candidates must be U.S. citizens. This is a wonderful opportunity for a unique experience and a great resume builder so please come by the National Scholarship Office to talk about applying. Contact Robyn Curtis, National Scholarship Officer, at 601.266.4533 to schedule an appointment.
